Manny Pacquiao’s next fight will air live on ESPN this summer and take place in Brisbane, Australia. The television network and Pacquiao’s promoter, Top Rank, announced the deal early Monday for the Filipino boxer’s welterweight world title defense against Jeff Horn, which will be Pacquiao’s first ever live basic cable fight — and first non-pay-per-view
This fight has attracted some criticism in Europe and America due to Horn’s low international profile. Horn has just 17 professional fights to his name and his most notable victory, his 2016 win over Randall Bailey, was over an opponent long past his best.
Horn is a talented fighter with a compelling story and the former schoolteacher is one of Australia’s best fighting exports for some time. If he can score an upset over the Filipino it will propel him to boxing superstardom — the fight will be televised live across America on ESPN.
What should I bet on?
Pacquiao is $1.20 to Horn’s $4.50 while a Pacquiao decision is $1.95. A Horn knockout is $6.00 if you’re feeling adventurous.
Who is on the undercard?
In terms of the prelim card, the most interesting bout is between Australian light-heavyweight Damien Hooper (12-1) and Russian prospect Umar Salamov (19-0).
On the main card, keep an eye out for featherweight Michael Conlon (2-0). The Irishman made headlines during the 2016 Olympics for an expletive-laden rant surrounding the corruption of amateur boxing and has two knockouts in his first two professional fights. He’ll take on Jarrett Owen (5-4-3), a local boy he should handle easily.
Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KOs) is a 38-year-old sitting senator in the Philippines who regained the welterweight world title belt he lost to Floyd Mayweather when he defeated Jessie Vargas in November.
Brisbane’s Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs), was a 2012 Australian Olympian and will help draw a ginormous Australian crowd at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, with 50,000 tickets already sold and an expected increase in available seating by 60,000.
In the middleweight fight on the card, Shane Mosley Jr. (10-1, 7 KOs) takes on Australia’s David Toussaint (10-0, 8 KOs) in an eight-round fight. The main card will begin at 10 p.m. with 2016 Irish Olympic star Michael Conlan (2-0, 2 KOs), clashing with Jarrett Owen (5-4-3, 2 KOs) of Brisbane, in a six-round featherweight fight.
In the junior bantamweight, Filipino fighter Jerwin Ancajas (26-1-1, 17 KOs), the first world titleholder promoted by Pacquiao's MP Promotions, will make his second defense of his 115-pound crown against Teiru Kinoshita (25-1-1, 8 KOs), the mandatory challenger from Japan, in the co-feature, right before Pacquiao-Horn.
